Sound Wall Installation & Dedication
Platform Art and Bonnet Springs Park (BSP) proudly announce the installation of the Sound Sculpture at Bonnet Springs Park. (The highly visible location along George Jenkins Blvd. is a temporary placement until it is placed at the permanent site located within the Park’s botanical gardens in 2021.)
Platform Art, a not-for-profit cultural arts organization in Lakeland, FL, partnered with Bonnet Springs Park, a fellow not-for-profit organization, to commission the first significant public artwork for the 167-acre Park. The Sound Wall sculpture will ultimately be moved and installed in the Harrell Family Botanical Gardens in 2021, representing the sense of sound. “This project fulfills a Platform Art goal to develop site-responsive public art,” said Executive Director Cynthia Haffey. “Public Art will enhance the aesthetics of the Parks campus, serve as informal gathering spaces, and enrich the cultural experiences of visitors.”
The Sound Wall sculpture project is a collaboration with All Saints Academy NuVu Innovation Studio, Art Research Enterprises, Inc., and Platform Art, Inc. Students in the NuVu program were challenged to create socially engaging designs representing one of the five senses, from which the final design was selected. “Bonnet Springs Park has made public art a priority, we’re excited to unveil the first of many installations within the Park,” said Bonnet Springs Park, CEO Bill Tinsley. Made of polished stainless steel, the sculpture features a 15’ serpentine wall integrated into the landscape, partially covered in natural vines, and a 9’ vertical section of decorative polychromed elements made of stainless steel, glass, and interactive chimes that mimic the lyrical sounds of rain and wind.
The Sound Wall sculpture concept was originally envisioned by ASA student artists, Laura Prazdnicane and Lucy Zhang, both of whom happen to be exchange students. Haffey explained,
“One of Platform Art’s program goals is to offer professional experiences to students and emerging artists, often providing their first opportunity to work in the public realm.”
This program has allowed Platform Art to work with some of the nation’s most prominent public artists including Becky Ault and Mike Cunningham of ART Research Enterprises, Inc. who worked directly with the students conducting critiques and evaluations throughout the design process; and virtually (due to Covid-19 restrictions) during fabrication.
ART Research Enterprises, Inc., based in Lancaster, PA is a leading producer of fine art castings and fabrication. Ault said, “Our relationship with Platform Art truly is a remarkable learning experience for student artists to explore socially engaging art design, impacting communities.” The Sound Wall is the fifth public art installation in Lakeland created through the Platform Art program model. Previous projects are located at Lakeland Electric on Lake Mirror and Veterans Memorial Park.
Platform Art, Inc. is recognized as an important cultural institution by the State of Florida and receives funding through the Division of Cultural Affairs, National Endowment for the Arts, and private donations for its public art programs. Platform Art provides forums for art experiences and supports the creation of public art for communities.
